F.A.Q.  (Frequently Asked Questions)

Seal Tech Waterproof Plaster / Decking / Coping Sealant Finish

Seal Tech Waterproof Plaster Sealant Finish:

Q: What is Seal Tech's Plaster Sealant Finish?
A: It is an acrylic based product meant to waterproof, cover stains and spots, and extend the life of swimming pool plaster. Think of Seal Tech of San Diego, Inc's sealants as a stain on wood, penetrating into the plaster.

Q: What makes Seal Tech Waterproof Plaster Sealant Finish a "great value" over resurfacing, paints, or epoxy applications?
A: The cost and down time of the pool makes sealing a pool an outstanding alternative to resurfacing, painting, or epoxy. Additionally, the sealant creates a waterproof barrier between the plaster and the swimming pool / spa water. The water chemistry stays in balance much easier with less chemical use. With proper water chemical balancing, the life expectancy is the life of the plaster. Usually 5-8 years untill a recoat IF the sealant fades.

Q: How are swimming pool sealant finish(plaster, deck, and coping) different from painting your swimming pool?
A: Swimming pool sealants and pool paint are completely different. Paint is applied over the top of the surface (plaster, deck, or coping) and tend to bind poorly leading to chalking, blistering, and peeling over time. Unlike paint, swimming pool sealants penetrate the porous plaster or concrete surface much like a stain penetrates porous wood. The sealant binds with the plaster surface, soaking into the plaster and will not come off. For plaster sealant, the only way the sealant can leave the plaster is if the plaster starts to de-laminate (flake off). If the plaster is starting to de-laminate, then a new surface, such as re-plastering, will be required.

Q: What condition must the plaster be in for the plaster to be a candidate for Seal Tech Waterproof Plaster Sealant Finish?
A: The ideal plaster surface is one that is not de-laminating (peeling or flaking). Older plaster jobs (5 years or older) with some de-lamination are questionable. Any plaster pool that is de-laminating throughout the pool's plaster surface should not be drained or sealed.

Q: How is the plaster sealant applied?
A: The pool / spa is drained and the plaster is normally cleaned by acid wash, chlorine bath, or power washing*. The sealant is applied directly to the plaster once the plaster is dry from cleaning. It is brushed on and usually dries in a couple of hours. Usually, one coat is sufficient to complete the sealant application. After the sealant is dry, the pool / spa is ready to refill with water.

Q: How long does it take for the entire process of sealing a plaster pool?
A: It depends on pool / spa size, the time it takes to drain the pool, to prep the plaster, to seal the pool plaster and to refill the pool. However, most 15,000-gallon backyard pools with a spa take 3 to 4 days to complete the entire process. It usually takes only the afternoon to apply the sealant. The pool can start to fill that day once the sealant is dry.

Q: Is the Seal Tech Waterproof Plaster Sealant Finish patented?
A: The plaster, coping, and deck sealants are all in the patent pending process.

Q: What colors does it come in?
A: The plaster sealants come in many colors with white, grey, black, and blue being the most popular. You will want to choose a color the same as the color of the plaster you want to seal.

Seal Tech Waterproof Coping Sealant Finish:

Q: What is Seal Tech Waterproof Coping Sealant Finish?
A: This sealant is used to revitalize new or older, weathered and rough, coping. The coping is first covered with a light texture coat and then the coping is sealed any color desired.

Q: What value does Seal Tech Waterproof Coping Sealant Finish offer?
A: This sealant will beautify your existing or new coping, adds texture for grip (safety), and gives the coping color to enhance the look of the pool as a whole. Much like the pool plaster sealant, the sealant will not flake or blister over time.

Q: How is the coping sealant finish applied?
A: The texture coat and sealant is applied by hand or a small roller for bull noise coping.

Q: What colors can the coping sealant finish come in?
A: The sealant can be any color desired, but usually a white, medium tan, or medium grey are the most popular and requested.

Seal Tech Waterproof Deck Sealant Finish:

Q: What is Seal Tech Waterproof Deck Sealant Finish?
A: It is a textured and sealant coat applied to concrete decks and walkways. This sealant is a textured, colored, and waterproofed product that beautifies swimming pool concrete decks and walkways. The texture gives the sealant a non-slip grip when wet.

Q: What value does the Seal Tech Waterproof Deck Sealant Finish provide?
A: Much like the plaster and coping sealants, the deck sealant will beautify your concrete deck and walkways by waterproofing, coloring, and texturing the concrete for grip (safety).

Q: What is the process for the Seal Tech Waterproof Deck Sealant Finish?
A: Clean the concrete deck by power washing, chlorine, or acid washing*. Apply the texture coat once the deck is dry. Apply the colored sealant once the textured coat is dry. Some decks that are cracked or need new areas of concrete would have those areas repaired or replaced first. Always allow new concrete to set and dry completely before applying the texture coat and sealant.

Q: What colors can the sealant finish come in for the deck?
A: The color can be any color desired. However, the most popular colors are medium tan or medium grey.

* NOTE: If you are not familiar or comfortable with any of these sealant procedures, please hire a licensed swimming pool contractor to perform this work.
